clairaudient: That would be me (Rina aka ME)

Bonjour tout le monde!

Name: Rina.

Age: 41 years.

I mostly post about: My everyday life, my thoughts, the emotional turmoil I am going through day by day, music (A LOT OF MUSIC TALK; this is more than just something I am interested in, it really is my passion :D!), lyrics/quotes/etc references, movies & books (When I can), struggles in my psyche, career talk *__*, spirituality, and also sometimes politics. And generally: LOVE!

My hobbies are: Creative writing [poetry (that can often be used as lyrics later) and general fictional stories], crocheting [Ironically I struggle less with magic rings than just simple chains?! Oô], cycling [I would *LOVE* to travel to places by bike, too!], dancing [To express myself; influenced mainly by industrial dancing, hiphop, acrobatics, bellydance, jazz dance, etc. I usually do not like dancing with partners, though :P, and I would LOVE to try hoop and pole dance!], DIY, drawing & painting [No matter the canvas! Mainly portraits, seals (and other animals) and lots of surrealist influences!], knitting, learning foreign languages, learning new things, listening to music, martial arts, mixing and mastering knowledge acquisation ;D, photography, playing the electric guitar, playing the keyboard/piano, recording music, sewing, singing, songwriting [music & lyrics], spiritual practices [Tropical and Chinese astrology, tarot/cartomancy, numerology, palmistry, tossing witches runes, scrying, aura readings, etc.], travelling, watching movies.

My fandoms are: I do not really know whether this counts as "fandom", because, yes, there are e. g. bands and musicians I really like a lot, but then again, I am not really part of any true "fandoms"... Before adding me, you should know: I struggle with my mental health (ORLY?), mainly in terms of C-PTSD, BPD, EDNOS/OSFED, and severe depression, and while I try not to overdo it in terms of expressing what this means, there could be entries in this regard... I will put potentially triggering entries behind cuts, though. Also: I'll be gone from Sunday (2nd) until Saturday (8th), so it might take a bit in case you comment then to answer you or add you back. If you have any more questions/comments, please let me know.

New Year's Resolutions and Other Goals

[community profile] goals_on_dw is a community for people who like goals and goal setting. A key focus is New Year's resolutions, that being among the most popular contexts for such activities. Although the most common time is January 1, "new year" can also refer to other calendars or cultures, whatever works for you. Alternatively, just pick a time that works for you and go for it. You can introduce yourself or make new friends here.

We talk about different goal systems, pros and cons of resolutions, arts and crafts for tracking goals, human psychology, and more. You can share your resolutions or other goals. There are weekly check-in posts in January, and monthly ones in the rest of the year, for folks to talk about their accomplishments.  December-January is the most active period, and it starts ramping up in November as lots of people begin thinking about their goals for the next year.

2025 New Year's Resolutions and Other Goals is the guide post for this years goal-setting activities.
For more details on relevant topics, see "Things You Can Talk About Here."

Newcomers

Trouble is brewing at Bluesky. As a result, there's a wave of new users coming into Dreamwidth. Find your Bluesky friends here.

[community profile] newcomers is a community for people who are just getting started on Dreamwidth, in the tradition of [community profile] twitter_refugees and [community profile] reddit_refugees. This community supports former users of other platforms who are moving to Dreamwidth because their previous platform has become untenable or has closed. As such, it will increase activity with each wave of new users, in hopes of helping them get settled in Dreamwidth so they want to stick around. It also serves previous users returning after a long hiatus, people who want to do more with a Dreamwidth blog that was only intermittent, or anyone else who wants help connecting and figuring out how to use this venue.

Book group

Tonight is another meeting of my book group, which at this point has been running for twelve years at this point.

We're a bit inconsistent, since in twelve years we've read 59 books, but we have read at least one book every single year. Some of them were excellent, like Bunnicula, This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed, The Devil in the White City, or The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, and some of them were garbage, like Anno Dracula, The Secret, Humpty Dumpty in Oakland, or Supernova Era. We've read fiction and nonfiction, history and biography and science and political analysis, fantasy and sci-fi and historical fiction and drama, classics and books written within the last year, and all kinds of things in between. People have joined and left but the core group remains. [livejournal.com profile] redpikachu started it as a way to read more books and it's worked, at least for the books we've read.

We spend a lot of time also just talking about our lives, but I'm heartened after reading that Even in the 1700s, Book Clubs Were Really About Drinking and Socializing. Other than the wine on Shabbat, most of the drinking I do at all is when I pour a glass of wine, sit down at my computer, and fire up a Discord video chat. And I just remembered that we used to do Google Hangouts back when that was a realistic video call solution.

Here's to many more years.

Database maintenance

Good morning, afternoon, and evening!

We're doing some database and other light server maintenance this weekend (upgrading the version of MySQL we use in particular, but also probably doing some CDN work.)

I expect all of this to be pretty invisible except for some small "couple of minute" blips as we switch between machines, but there's a chance you will notice something untoward. I'll keep an eye on comments as per usual.

Ta for now!

Go away healthy and come back sick

It's what happens with school but it's also what happened with Laila on her visit to the grandparents this weekend. They kept her an extra day (through Monday at 10:30 a.m.), and she initially had some energy when she came home, but eventually fell asleep on the couch and later took a long nap in her room. I'm at the office today, but [instagram.com profile] sashagee told me that Laila is also being cuddly and taking a nap today. We've kept her home from school both days, which I'm not happy about since she's been missing a lot of school lately, but when she has a fever of 38.3°C and snot is streaming from her nose and she just wants to sleep, we can't exactly send her to school. Hopefully she feels better tomorrow.

The rest of the weekend went much better, though. We were originally going to drive Laila out to the grandparents on Friday after work, give back their car (which we've had for a couple months now), but last week we were invited to a birthday party of one of Laila's classmates, so on Friday we lit the Shabbat candles and spent the night in:

Picture )
...and then Saturday morning we went out in the fortunately not-raining weather to the Lincoln Park Zoo and wandered a bit until we found the birthday boy. This took some doing, because none of us--including the birthday family--knew that the zoo was having a Spooky Family Event, so there were hundreds of people around in costume, tables of zoo employees passing out candy, carnival rides, the works. We went from exhibit to exhibit, watching the lions who were out sunning themselves in the unseasonably-warm weather, the kids went into a big bouncy obstacle course, they ran all around the children's garden, and we rode the train for a bit when the party was over. Laila hung back a bit, but she wasn't the only kid who did, so I didn't feel too bad. Some of those kids definitely had a ton of energy.

We drove out to the suburbs, dropped off the car and Laila, went out to a lunch date--I got the poke, [instagram.com profile] sashagee got a brie burger--got some dessert and then hopped on the train. All of that meant we got home close to 5 p.m., almost in time for the party we were going to, so I finished up my exercise while [instagram.com profile] sashagee sat down for a bit, we packed up the grandma's potato soup that we were bringing, and called a Lyft to head to [twitter.com profile] spacedragon's soup party!

This all started from a Discord thread that spiraled out into dozens of soup jokes and memes, and eventually spiraled out into a bunch of people wanting to eat soup. We arrived a little later after the initial soup consumption, but there was still some lentil soup (made by [instagram.com profile] confuciousdragon) and vegan arroz caldo (made by [instagram.com profile] become_unglu3d--the chicken version had already been eaten) as well as French bread and tomato soup bread (think zucchini bread but tomato soup based), so I took a bunch of lentil soup and bread and stood around the kitchen table chatting with people about Witch Watch and soup. Despite being full, a bunch of people came back to sample [instagram.com profile] sashagee's grandma's potato soup (potatoes, milk, carrots, green onions), and we ended up staying until midnight when everyone finally ran out of energy and went home.

The next day [instagram.com profile] sashagee wasn't feeling well, so other than a quick shopping trip out to the Middle Eastern Grocery Store to restock on pita and halvah and pickles we didn't do anything. And then Monday, Laila came back sick. And so we come full circle.

Alright, workday's over, time to pick up the last CSA box of the year.

There is more to the information battlefield

I have been thinking lately about how the abstract idea of the "information battlefield" actually plays out in practice. You know, the way raw facts, stories, visuals and algorithms get pulled into campaigns that aren't just about truth vs falsehood, but about influence, disruption, trust, identity. One case in point is the war in Ukraine and how it's become as much about narratives as it is about tanks.

On the surface, you see shelling, troop movements, geopolitics. But underneath all that there is a parallel front where messages are being shaped, amplified, twisted. For instance, according to recent research, false or misleading content tied to the Ukraine conflict has surged across social platforms, often using visuals taken out of context, recycled images/videos, sensational claims — all woven into a larger campaign of influence:

AWS outage

DW is seeing some issues due to today's Amazon outage. For right now it looks like the site is loading, but it may be slow. Some of our processes like notifications and journal search don't appear to be running and can't be started due to rate limiting or capacity issues. DW could go down later if Amazon isn't able to improve things soon, but our services should return to normal when Amazon has cleared up the outage.

Edit: all services are running as of 16:12 CDT, but there is definitely still a backlog of notifications to get through.

Edit 2: and at 18:20 CDT everything's been running normally for about the last hour.

Baby Talk

One benefit of Laila having a speech delay is that a lot of really cute toddler expressions that go away too fast (from a parents' perspective) have stuck around for longer. Here's a list of them at this point, so I don't forget them later:
  • Tromise: What she says when she's telling us she won't do it (whatever "it" is) again. Upgrades to "Big Tromise" when she's trying to show us how serious she is. This is already fading away into "Promise"
  • Princess Stuff: Sparkly gowns, high heels, tiaras, gloves, anything that she knows a princess would wear.
  • Hold You: In most other circumstances she's got I/you down but this one lingers when she wants me to pick her up.
  • Same same!: Any time two things are similar, usually accompanied by pointing at them and then crossing her arms and pointing at the opposite one.
  • Big Giiiiiiiirl!: Always in a sing-song voice, whenever she does something she knows is a sign of getting older that she's proud of, like putting her clothes on by herself. She'll also use "Big girl" to describe anyone acting like a grownup--I got called a big girl for putting my shoes on myself.
  • Cheese hangaburs: What she says when someone is taking a picture of her.
  • Ah-bay: The alphabet.
  • Peppersalts: Salt and pepper.
  • Little Girl: There are three classifications of people--babies, little girls, and people who are elderly. A little girl is anyone from about age 6 to 45.
  • Flamingos: "Mangos." Sometimes this becomes "Flamangos."
  • Somegetti: Spaghetti.
What a cutey. Emoji Kawaii heart

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, fatphobia. Please don't be a bigot. Also, I don't wish to add anyone who identifies as an "anti" or believes certain types of fiction should inherently be censored, and will unadd for this kind of behavior.

The Sickness

I have been sick all this week, which has been a bummer.

I've left the house twice, to get groceries/meds, and that's it. I've spent the entirety of the week either in the bedroom or downstairs on the couch.

Thankfully my roommate, Lance (yes that is his real name and no he is not gay), had to go out of town this week for job training, so I haven't infected him. I did however have to take care of the cats, which was nice, if a bit exhausting. Roma, the kitten, has two settings: Sleep and Zoomie! She has spent most of this week in Zoomie! mode, literally bouncing off the walls.

As I write this, I'm actually feeling a lot better than I did on Tuesday. I called in to work and am taking tomorrow off, but I think I'll be good for Saturday and Sunday. And I guess I'll go in some time next week and work an extra day or something to make up for Friday.

Now, if only my stomach will stop making sounds like a still about to explode...
