The part of the textbook right before the section called "The Years of Blood"

Charlie Kirk shot in Utah, died.

It's easy to look at this and say, oh look, the dude who spent his whole life sowing the wind has reaped the whirlwind. And you're honestly not wrong to say that, but the kind of country where people get shot at during a speaking event at a university campus is not really a good country to live in, it's the kind of country we have historically issued travel advisories about. I think it'll be more useful to look at the reaction to this vs. the reaction to the Michigan state reps who were assassinated in their homes, because I suspect it will be very different.

Also, as the reaction to the Minneapolis school shooter (and basically every shooting back to and including Sandy Hook) shows, literally nothing can happen that will make the right engage in a good-faith argument about gun violence, so this won't either.

America thinks of a civil war as two sides in different uniforms lining up and shooting each other, because that's what our civil war is like, but that's not what most civil wars are. I expect our civil war to be more like the Troubles--constantly low grade violence to the point that you never feel entirely safe. There are no frontlines, the battlefield sudden appears in ordinary neighborhoods and bars and train stations and then vanishes as the ambulance siren gets closer.

Also, on a personal note, Kirk had a three-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son. They don't deserve life without a father.

America's biggest problem

https://time.com/7297269/founders-wealth-inequality-could-destroy

Economic inequality in the US has reached record levels, with nearly 70% of wealth concentrated in the hands of the richest 10%. Corporate profits and shareholder dividends have skyrocketed over the past five decades, while the share of economic growth reaching workers has steadily declined. By 2023, the working class had effectively lost the gains it had built up since the post World War 2 era.

This growing wealth gap threatens American democracy itself. The poorest half of the population owns just 3% of the nation's wealth, and the consequences are visible in worsening health outcomes, rising addiction and suicide rates, and increasing family instability. At the same time, the influence of the wealthy over politics has deepened, eroding trust in institutions and fueling populist, often authoritarian movements.

If the US is to preserve democracy and social stability, restoring the idea of "general welfare" as outlined in the Constitution must become a priority. Inequality is not inevitable, but reversing it will require bold, long-term reforms.

Among the possible solutions I think are raising the minimum wage, reforming the tax system to ensure the wealthy pay a fairer share, strengthening labour protections, and investing in affordable healthcare and education. These measures could help rebalance the economy and rebuild trust in democratic institutions. I know, easier said than done, especially with the stance of the current administration.

Hello!

Name: Star/Soda

Age: Late 20s

I mostly post about: Fanart, fanfiction, character/story development, personal ramblings

My hobbies are: Illustration, writing, collecting figures, plushies, and other merchandise (both official and fanmade)

My fandoms are: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003, IDW, 1990, Splintered Fate), Pokemon, plenty of other animated TV shows and video games I won't bother listing

I'm looking to meet people who
: Share my interests, are open-minded and respectful, and otherwise pleasant and chill to be around.

My posting schedule tends to be
: Aiming for at least once a week, possibly more frequently depending on how chatty I feel or if I have art/writing I'd like to share

When I add people, my dealbreakers are
: I do not tolerate any form of bigotry. AI "art" and "writing" is also a major no-no, and I have a few major squicks on the shipping front that I prefer to avoid as much as possible. In addition, I will not subscribe to or add users to my access list who are under the age of 18.

Before adding me, you should know:  For the moment, none of my entries are locked and anyone is free to subscribe. If an entry has potentially sensitive/triggering content, there will be a warning beforehand. Anyone is free to comment on my posts as well; however, I prefer to interact with others who are at least 20 or older, and will not be responding to comments by minors.

Huxleyenne's Theme Hits

Name: Risa

Age: 36

I mostly post about: I ramble briefly about writing, wrestling, people, whatever I'm feeling. I try to save my most crude and raunchy language/ideas for the fanfiction that I write. As a person who's been on the Internet long enough to know what it's like to run a Geocities site, I've seen... oh god. I've seen things. We've all seen things we cannot unsee. Sometimes I can be a little sardonic and grumpy about it, but I have a sense of humor. I'd always rather laugh, even when I'm crying. Not in a toxic positivity sort of way, but more in a way that I don't burden people with too much emotional baggage.

My hobbies are: Writing fanfiction, reading books and wrestling fic, watching emotionally damaged pretty people in tights get into stage fights, cooking and baking, and walking/jogging/hiking as my antidepressant (I've lost 95lbs. I am a weight loss advocate, but I'm neither fatphobic, nor do I view weight loss in an of itself as fatphobic. Let's respect each other, OK?) I'm not nearly the gamer I used to be, but I have dabbled enough in JRPGs, D&D, and Magic the Gathering that we can have conversations about all of these things.

My fandoms are: World Wrestling Entertainment (the superstars, particularly Dusty's kids f*ck the company, though!), South Park, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Final Fantasy (in general, but 9 and 8 are overwhelmingly my faves) Stardew Valley, and gosh. Take me back to 90s/early 2000s Nicktoons and anime all day.

I'm looking to meet people who: I'm looking for chill friends who do their own thing, but take the time to say hello every now and then. I will try to do the same. I've been showing up to DW every day since I registered, so I dare say I'll be around. The only other social media site I use is Tumblr, and I don't do much there other than like and occasionally reblog wrestling stuff. AO3 is the site I'm most active on. I go where the fic goes.

My posting schedule tends to be: I'm aiming to update 3-4 times a week about any thoughts relevant to writing, but I won't force it. If I got nothing to say, then that's that. IRL, my life is super boring. I work. I exist. Not much to say about that. Carving out a little writer life on the Internet is my excitement.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: People under 18 is a hard no. MAGA is a harder no. If you are an existential threat to my people in the LGBT community, I don't respect that and never will. I will fight this prejudice until my dying breath, including any random internalized sexism/queerphobia that may still linger inside of me.

Before adding me, you should know: I'm just a writer, guys. The current flavor is kinky wrestling yaoi, which you can read on AO3 if you're interested. Other than that, I'm cobbling together a collection of original work. My favorite DW community is [community profile] fic_promptly, and I plan on posting a lot of fills. I'm still getting used to being back on DW. Apologies if I'm not always consistent.

Happy SilkSong Day to all who celebrate

First time I've bought a game on release for...years.

It currently has 97% rating of Overwhelming Positive on Steam based on people playing it for a couple hours. On the other hand, they're only charging $20 for game that crashed Steam, GamePass, the Playstation store, and the Switch Online store when it came out. I think they deserve a bit of kudos for that.

We'll see if I beat Witch Spring or Silksong first.

Code Pink?

Ugh.

I went to Michael's today to see what Halloween stuff they had and was horrified and not in a good way. Their Halloween displays were all pink and white and shiny silvery sequins.

I was apalled and just kind of walked around with this apalled expression on my face at the Return of Creepycute Halloween.

Ugh.

Thankfully, they did have more traditional Halloween decor in their seasonal section. Lots of skeletons and witches and a weird number of Edgar Allen Poe themed decor.

I found a couple of little dancing skeletons which made me think back to when I would decorate Boneparte, my big plastic skull, for Halloween and all the major witchy/pagan holidays. I actually got a little nostalgic.

sad dirty elder millennial commie seeks friends for virtual coffee

Name: Mary Cuntrarian or Kat, my real nickname. She/They

Age: near 40

I mostly post about: Right now my journal is new so I'm not exactly sure but I haven't written anything since about 2015. I'm mostly posting stream of consciousness thoughts and things that won't leave my brain like themes in fiction and in life. I might make my journal friends-only soon since that's a thing I can do and write things that are more personal because my life is sort of a mess at the moment and I need to write it out. I'm an artist and I've been putting a lot of effort into my art career recently so I know I'll be writing about my process and struggles there.

My hobbies are: I dabble in all kinds of painting and crafts, but mostly watercolor and ink. I crochet, do some embroidery, I'm relearning web design and have started making web pages as art and for fun. I used to play more video games but nothing has caught my interest lately but I have played Disco Elysium, Fallout 76, Stardew Valley, Breath of the Wild, some GTA Online, Animal Crossing (Pocket Camp, but it counts!) and other random rpgish games. I also have been playing a lot of Dungeons and Dragons lately, and I love coming up with characters! Trying to get back into writing, right now just blogging but maybe fiction and poetry soon. I don't know if I'll write fanfic, I have started making icons again and I think I'll have fully regressed into my old LJer self if I write fanfic again. Which might not be BAD.

My fandoms are: Currently I have some hyperfixations but I hesitate to call them fandoms in the old fashioned way. I'm less obsessed with things than I used to be but I will say my old fangirl tendencies have popped up a little again.

Right now I'm into The Matrix movies including Resurrections, Neo/Trinity might make me read fic again and I'm also watching Sense8 for the first time and I'm really liking it so I'm in a Wachowski Sisters kinda mood.

I love AEW wrestling and I'll list my favorite wrestlers for you if you care. lol

I'm also watching Legends of Tomorrow and almost done with it, pretty into it and I love Constantine.

I recently read the Southern Reach series and could talk about those books forever. Jeff Vandermeer and Edward Carey are my favorite living authors with Shirley Jackson being my favorite classic writer.

Music I'm fannish about is Lord Huron and Tyler the Creator. I'm into indie hip hop and I've gotten into riot grrrl music for the first time recently.

I'm looking to meet people who: Just want to talk and connect? No bullshit, just sharing random cool thoughts and ideas. I'm a stoner, can we start an internet blunt rotation? lol

I've seen a lot of people saying this online recently but I'm looking for that old internet feeling again. I made a Neocities page, I want to talk to people about shit again and not just tweet a few sentences and hope it gets likes.

My posting schedule tends to be: Sporadic as of late but I'm going to post more now that I'm here. I was posting on tumblr here and there but I felt like there were no conversations to be had there. I'm aiming for once a week at least.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: No bigotry, no terfs, no AI worshippers, MAGA-heads or generally fuckery. I'm basically a dirty commie and I'm not too afraid to talk about it so if that makes you uncomfortable oh well.

Before adding me, you should know: I'm currently struggling quite a bit in life, lost a lot of my agency and control because of lack of money, lost my apartment, and my general sense of self so I might talk about that at times. I'm disabled and queer, neurodivergent and cannot find a job to save my life and currently live with my partner and their family which is rough. If you don't want to hear about my personal bullshit from time to time, I'm probably not the person to follow.

I mostly post about: writing, life, parenting, school, work, sometimes politics, sometimes other hobbies

My hobbies are: writing, drawing, web stuff, reading, misc fiber arts

My fandoms are: at the moment, Fourth Wing with a side of the Untamed and All For the Game

I'm looking to meet people who: do interesting things, share interesting facts, recommend interesting books, etc... mostly I'm just looking to add some people to my friends page.

My posting schedule tends to be: sporadic. sometimes it can be multiple times a week, and sometimes I will absolutely forget dreamwidth exists.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: life is too short to deal with people who just want to argue with me. I'm trans and neurodivergent and pagan and a parent and if any of those would bother you, well, now you know.

Before adding me, you should know: two unrelated but occasionally controversial things: we're a plural system and we still mask in crowded public spaces. Neither comes up often on the blog but both have turned out to be dealbreakers for other people before.

i mean lots of complaining that it hasn't rained

Name: Keplers_angels. I answer to Trudy, but it's not my name.

Age: 46

I mostly post about: I mostly write to make myself real. And to stun people with my wordery. To give consolation. (or wound) And to figure it out.... Been journaling a long time so there are shifts in topic climate but generally it's a lot of poetry and poeticity on sex and angst with smatterings of perimenopause, breastlessness, and feminism, interpersonal relationships... what to do with my life?! existential and metaphysical drama.... I don't shy away from much-- I come to confess. There will be adult content. There may be mathematics, politics, pain, complaints and exhortations, poems and poems and poems and lots of complaining that it hasn't rained. (In general though, my posts are usually much more readable than this is.)

My hobbies are: This. This is my hobby. Outside of work, which is a whole thing, this. I write. I try to make myself submit poems to stuff. I read books, I waste untold hours on fb, I'm learning to sext, I practice yoga, I over analyze things and am pretentious and arrogant except when I'm in joyful denial or drowning in insecurity. In short, I tell the truth about myself -brutally- but I'm not a very reliable narrator.... what was the question again?

My fandoms are: I don't fandom here. But I lived very happily in Man From UNCLE fandom for most of a decade. It saved my life. Sometimes I'll still do an erotic little fandom vignette but fandom's not why I'm here.

I'm looking to meet people who: write similar, or completely different, kinds of things. Mostly I'm looking for my early aughts LJ experience back. I want people who write with emotion and who will read and comment on my posts as I will read and comment on theirs. If you're not going to read your friends page then I don't want you on mine.

My posting schedule tends to be: In 2025 it's been pretty every-day-ish. (at least weekly, usually more) Which pleases me and I hope it will last. I am not *as* punctual with my friends page and comments but I always catch up-- weekly give-or-take.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: stalking. violating my privacy or anonymity. I'm not opposed in principle to friends of different belief systems to mine but of course, we all have limits, and I'm not going to censor my own posts to avoid those kinds of things. Content wise, if you post something I can't abide, I'll unfriend. But I don't like my echo-chamber to be too constrictive.

Yet another step towards fascism in Russia

Starting September 1, Russia has a new law (№ 281-F3) that makes even searching online for so-called “extremist content” punishable by fines. What counts as extremist? Pretty much anything the state decides: from LGBTQ+ information to opposition posts, music, films, or books.

REUTERS

The law allows penalties of up to 5K rubles, supposedly only if intent can be proven. But in practice, intent is subjective, and the lists of banned materials are constantly expanding. With nearly 40% of Russians using VPNs to bypass restrictions, a huge portion of the population could now be branded potential offenders.

Authorities claim VPNs are not banned. But promoting them already brings hefty fines, and using them to access blacklisted materials could be taken as proof of “intent”. Lawyers point out that monitoring such activity is murky and could easily open the door to arbitrary enforcement.

This is not about safety or order. It’s about tightening control, silencing dissent, and reminding people that every click might be watched. To me, this is yet another step towards fascism, cloaked in the language of “security.”

What’s most chilling is how ordinary behaviors such as reading, listening to music, even searching out of curiosity can now be criminalized. A society where information itself is dangerous is one where fear replaces freedom, and that’s exactly what authoritarian regimes thrive on. If anyone had doubts if Russia was descending into fascism, here's your proof.

End of Hermitcraft season 10

It was announced that season 10 will end this month! There are many activities planned for this month, games etc., including a big event on the 20th for which every hermit can invite one guest.

I enjoyed season 10 a lot and I'm sad that it's almost over. I'm going to miss the postal service and all the games, I'm sad that some storylines won't have more time to play out like fight club or whatever Cleo was planning to do to with Cub, and I'm crossing my fingers all hermits will have time to bring their projects to a point where they're satisfied (particularly looking at Joe and Impulse here.)

At the same time I'm excited for a new season, for whatever they might be doing in-between seasons, for the other announcements coming at TwitchCon that were teased, and of course for the world download so I too can try playing Ghastketball, and Ravager Rush and all the other games.

I hope to make a list of my personal highlights of season 10 before it's done, featuring great moments like Cleo's ride of spite and Scar stealing Grian's Mending book and Doc being sentenced to skyblock.

I post: Snippets of writing, fanfics, ruminations, random thoughts, journal entries, notes about what I'm reading, watching or playing.

Hobbies: Writing, reading, artsy things (sketching, gelli prints, collage, etc.), video games (Minecraft, Fallout, TES, Stardew, Dishonored, and more), hiking, swimming, wandering... I could go on.

Fandoms: Currently: Star Wars (I live in the Clone Wars era for the most part); Skyrim; Fallout; Cyberpunk 2077.

Looking to meet people who: Have similar interests, share their thoughts, ruminations, talk about their passions, can commiserate on how we could do better as a species because *gestures broadly*

My posting schedule is: Sporadic. I've had this journal for years (it's an import of my old LiveJournal which I started in 2001) but I've long been on other social media, much of which I've deleted over the last year. I'm working on getting back into blogging and reducing the time I spend on places like Reddit.

Before adding me, you should know: I'm a lefty. I don't plan to post about politics here (I tend to do that elsewhere) but I reserve the right to vent on occasion.

I'm an atheist. (I don't go out of my way to harsh anyone's personal spirituality but I am critical of religious institutions and this does affect how I navigate the world.)

Reading and posting may be sporadic as I work on parting from other social media and reviving my blogging and creative writing.

Dealbreakers are: The usual -isms and phobias. Trump voters. Nazis. AI devotees. General assholes. (Wheaton's Law, eh?) Tl;dr: We can debate pineapple on pizza (I'm pro), we will not debate human rights and wellbeing.
