(no subject)
Dec. 7th, 2022 09:25 amAt the weekend I met up with my old school (and 6th form) mate Dave, who I haven't seen for twenty years. In a surprise to me it was a lot of fun and reminded me of a whole chapter of my life that I think I'd dumped in the memory bin.
I'm truly awful at keeping in touch with people, I think it's a rare piece of self doubt that as soon as I don't see people for a while I can't imagine that they'd ever want to hear from me again. I must remember that this is stupid, and I have met some fantastic people in my life span and should occasionally make some effort to see them!
Additionally I learned there's a nice pub in Bamford called the Anglers (something featuring the word angler at least) and it's definitely going to have to feature on a future "nature walk".

Birdsite vs the Mastodon
Nov. 10th, 2022 10:16 amAs someone who made the the leap off twitter (although also still there for the 🍿), and on to the fediverse a while ago, it's been interesting to watch the "great twitter migration" unfold over the last few days. With the arrival of the Stephen Fry and Neil Gaiman heavyweights there's a distinct change of atmosphere.
I am pretty confident that the federated structure will allow to retain of that "local feel" over there to people who found a good instance and not just "mastodon.social" or whatever. I am sure there will growing pains, there's quite a lot of cultural etiquette inherent in the platform. That said part of the culture is not being shy about educating newcomers to keep things nice.
I do wonder what dreamwidth would feel like if such a thing happened over here.. And then I remember I kinda lived this as I'm old enough to have been around when LJ was *the* thing. Although of course the internet itself wasn't attracting "celebrities" back then, thankfully.
Separately I do often wonder if someone should take this old LJ tech, mix in opensocial and make *this* part of the fediverse. I do imagine instances working really nicely with this thing. That said, maybe this is nice for it being a hidden harbour on the corner of the internet.
Ultimately, will this current phase be a fad or will the fediverse become [a big chunk of] the social internet? And if it does how (inevitably) will the corporate world try and eat it.

Said goodbye to blue yesterday. He looked longing into my eyes as he went. No more pain.
I did leave it a few days too long and this last weekend wasn't easy for him. But he's not suffering now.
He made a good age and lived much longer with cancer than the odds gave him. Also the last year he had some of his best times, so no regrets. Although I'll always miss his goofy face.

Chai and leggings
Oct. 17th, 2022 03:59 pmLovely day today in Manchester with Kr0n. We intended to spend all day there today, but the dog's continuously deteriorating health cut it short as we felt we couldn't leave him for too long.
I finally got K to take advantage of my 50% discount at work and get herself some clothes. But aside from that we went back to North Tea Power, my "work from a cafe" home when we lived in MCR. Amazingly one of the owners (Jane), who isn't there as much nowadays was in and we had a little reminisce, and noted how we've both made the switch to living in the sticks.
NTP's food has got even better, K was blown away by how good the coffee was and I had my staple "white hairy monkey" which was also very much on form.
Also I'm now sipping a tasty spicy cup of "sticky chai" as were were able to pop by Bird & Blend.
I would sort-of like to spend a day working there in the modern era, although my newer jobs have involved far more talking to people which is a pain. Perhaps I'll build up to it by working from our local nice cafe some more (Little Fika).

The last graduate (Scolomance #2)
Oct. 16th, 2022 03:22 pm
So I just read the last graduate, Naomi Novik's second "Scolomance" book.. The magic school series that's more sarcasm + insane monster piles than anything as mundane as lessons. As a series generally, it's worth it for the central character because El is awesome.
In the terms of that limelight hogging magic school book series, she definitely got the dark sorceress end of the sorting hat.. But she's just as cooperative with destiny as she is with the love interest: not at all.
This was one which I was 70% feeling most of the way through, but then it had an absolutely titanic ending. Anybody else who's read this will definitely have had a reaction! I'd also like to see the stats of people who got to the end of this one and said: nah that's it for me.. I need the closure!
Thankfully the golden enclaves is fresh out, so after a seemly amount of TBR chomping I'll definitely be ordering that one.
Very weird the Queen dying. Obviously been on the cards for a while, and has very little effect on anything really.. But yet it feels like a last tie to a past version of the country that's soundly gone. Kr0n is re-watching "the crown" and it honestly feels like a very foreign land in a way it wouldn't have yesterday.
I guess we'll get used to it.. Just new stamps and things. Although I do wonder if Charles will be the last one?
Odd having a king.

Arctangent
Aug. 25th, 2022 09:27 amArctangent was a very good festival.
Tiny site, and a much smaller population than even beautiful days. Very high music standard.
Found lots of good new stuff (Dvne, Bruit the early winners), although Maybeshewill still stole the crown. Main stage headliners were mostly duff, but Opeth of course put in an amazing show.
The rule is supposed to be back to Beautiful Days next year, where amongst other things I missed Ned's Atomic Dustbin this year. However if Arc has a strong lineup that decision is going to be tough.

Festival time again
Aug. 16th, 2022 10:01 pmTime for the second festival of the year (Arctangent). A bit anxious leaving the pets. I think partly due to the pandemic, we're not used to leaving them any more.
Blue didn't have a stellar time at the kennel last time, although his leg is much better now than back then.
Piggy has really become super personably so I think she's going to miss us. She's getting regular visits while we're gone though. 🤞 it'll all go smooth.
Aside from all that looking forward to the music!

Everything Everwhere All At Once
Jul. 25th, 2022 10:38 amEverything Everwhere All At Once, I'm not going to attempt to describe this film. But oh boy. I'd describe the after effects of of watching this film as being similar to the after effects of psilocybin; a complete brain reset and realignment. It's a wild film, but I think an excellent one.
Although I can foresee some people hating it. I think everyone's reaction to it will be different as it hits a lot of particular nerves. For example Kr0n got a very particular vibe as it features strongly a difficult mother/daughter relationship. But there are several of these axes that it can hit you on.
This is probably just incoherent babble at this stage, but suffice to say: interesting film.

Glastonbury: prologue
Jun. 21st, 2022 09:55 amOff to Glastonbury tomorrow for the first time in a very long time.
Getting there however is going to be a thing, because of the train strike. I didn't book a car ticket and I wouldn't take the car with Kr0n remaining here. So train travel during a train strike it is!
Wednesday isn't actually a strike day, which is something. The initial challenge seems to be almost no trains from Manchester to Bristol. The official mouthpieces also only really say they're trying to keep trains from London running. Thanks guys... But it seems like it's going to be at least possible, albeit take all day.
If I can get there, find everyone and find somewhere to camp... I'll be doing well.

Casa di pizza
Jun. 17th, 2022 10:47 amHad a lovely night at Casa di Pizza last night with Kr0n, to celebrate our not-quite-anniversary. Substitute night because I'll be at Glastonbury for the main event. It was lovely, although I think potentially future expensive as it made us realise they are still doing take-away. Also never actually tried pizza there (despite the name), but seeing (smelling!) the pizza was amazing.
I think this will lead to us getting pizza from there and discovering it's 1000 times nicer and maybe 2x the price of the regular place. Actually that already sounds like a good trade. *homer doughnut noises*
Speaking so much of things we didn't eat.. I actually had some battered calemari and then a carbonara. The calemari were so-so, but the carbonara was a work of art. I've made carbonara a lot so I know it's one of those "simple" things that really shows any imperfection, and this was perfect.
