Christmas was planned to be in Edinburgh this year, but in a house full of cats our still-not-cat-friendly pupper would not go. So we stayed home. Nice Christmas, although I feel we're both a bit burned out. Did get to play Baldur's Gate a lot, which stood in for getting any relaxation in.

I'm working again now in twixtmas, although immediately off again tomorrow for my friend Babs funeral.

Oh my DW

Oh my DW.. Things have been busy.

Promotion and new doggo have been eating my life.

One gave me a dollop of imposter syndrome, but that's starting to fade. The other has given me lots of excercise, eaten some bits of my furniture and otherwise been adorable. Still no peace with the cat yet.

Nearly festival time though.

Puppy is HARD WORK! But hopefully will be worth it. He does have a bunch of issues, but he's young (6 months) so we should be able to turn him around.

The big thing as always is feeling safe with the cat and then a lot of things get more chill. We're a ways off that, but have de-stressed him with sheep which is a good sign.

Doggo meet went well! Very affectionate lovely dog. Should be picking him up tomorrow.

After much fruitless applying to adopt dogs, from a small pool as dogs trust are reticent to say a dog can live with a cat, we are meeting one tomorrow! His name is Alfie and he's a gorgeous collie. Like our old dog blue he has a blue eye, but unlike blue one is 100% blue the other is 100% brown. I'd put a pic on here but I'm superstitious about posting before it's done and he's settled.

Honestly the only reason I feel I can post this at all is nobody I know reads this any more so it's virtually a private diary :p , no offence to you lovely random internet people who do see this.

Anyway, exciting times and I'll of course be posting more about this whatever happens.

There's an election (local) today, which mostly reminds me I no longer have a dog to take to a polling station. To people from countries without this delight taking pictures of dogs at polling stations is a british meme, possibly now a tradition I think?

Prior example:

But I'm not sad about it because I'm now confident I'll be in on this for the next one! Our dog search has begun in earnest. Of course DW will be the first to know!

Not been good at journaling recently so some general lif update:

Scales ran out of battery before Christmas, and the battery is awkward to change. Skip to the end: Have got fatter.

Related, have started to get back into a (swimming pool) swimming habit. Better for exercise than reservoir swimming, but not such a good brain benefit. Still feels good. I think the dog walking was doing me more good than I realised.

Been a bit down in the mood stakes. I guess a lot of this is post-dog related. Still we've fixed an ACTUAL HOLIDAY for April (Norway), and this is the magical gateway to being allowed to think about dogs again.

Double Bass playing is literally zero. :(

Breadmaking similarly not in a good place.

Related: still very very very addicted to Dwarf Fortress.

Kr0n has me hooked to watching Happy Valley, which I have a love/hate relationship with watching. I guess like much of it's fanbase.

At the weekend I met up with my old school (and 6th form) mate Dave, who I haven't seen for twenty years. In a surprise to me it was a lot of fun and reminded me of a whole chapter of my life that I think I'd dumped in the memory bin.

I'm truly awful at keeping in touch with people, I think it's a rare piece of self doubt that as soon as I don't see people for a while I can't imagine that they'd ever want to hear from me again. I must remember that this is stupid, and I have met some fantastic people in my life span and should occasionally make some effort to see them!

Additionally I learned there's a nice pub in Bamford called the Anglers (something featuring the word angler at least) and it's definitely going to have to feature on a future "nature walk".

Lovely day today in Manchester with Kr0n. We intended to spend all day there today, but the dog's continuously deteriorating health cut it short as we felt we couldn't leave him for too long.

I finally got K to take advantage of my 50% discount at work and get herself some clothes. But aside from that we went back to North Tea Power, my "work from a cafe" home when we lived in MCR. Amazingly one of the owners (Jane), who isn't there as much nowadays was in and we had a little reminisce, and noted how we've both made the switch to living in the sticks.

NTP's food has got even better, K was blown away by how good the coffee was and I had my staple "white hairy monkey" which was also very much on form.

Also I'm now sipping a tasty spicy cup of "sticky chai" as were were able to pop by Bird & Blend.

I would sort-of like to spend a day working there in the modern era, although my newer jobs have involved far more talking to people which is a pain. Perhaps I'll build up to it by working from our local nice cafe some more (Little Fika).

Very weird the Queen dying. Obviously been on the cards for a while, and has very little effect on anything really.. But yet it feels like a last tie to a past version of the country that's soundly gone. Kr0n is re-watching "the crown" and it honestly feels like a very foreign land in a way it wouldn't have yesterday.

I guess we'll get used to it.. Just new stamps and things. Although I do wonder if Charles will be the last one?

Odd having a king.

Time for the second festival of the year (Arctangent). A bit anxious leaving the pets. I think partly due to the pandemic, we're not used to leaving them any more.

Blue didn't have a stellar time at the kennel last time, although his leg is much better now than back then.

Piggy has really become super personably so I think she's going to miss us. She's getting regular visits while we're gone though. 🤞 it'll all go smooth.

Aside from all that looking forward to the music!

Everything Everwhere All At Once, I'm not going to attempt to describe this film. But oh boy. I'd describe the after effects of of watching this film as being similar to the after effects of psilocybin; a complete brain reset and realignment. It's a wild film, but I think an excellent one.

Although I can foresee some people hating it. I think everyone's reaction to it will be different as it hits a lot of particular nerves. For example Kr0n got a very particular vibe as it features strongly a difficult mother/daughter relationship. But there are several of these axes that it can hit you on.

This is probably just incoherent babble at this stage, but suffice to say: interesting film.

Piggy (the cat) has now been caught red handed (pawed?) dropping a live frog in the dogs water bowl. So this is now confirmed to be part of her psychological warfare.

Previously I thought they might just have been hopping in there after escaping from her, but no, it's deliberate.

Had a lovely night at Casa di Pizza last night with Kr0n, to celebrate our not-quite-anniversary. Substitute night because I'll be at Glastonbury for the main event. It was lovely, although I think potentially future expensive as it made us realise they are still doing take-away. Also never actually tried pizza there (despite the name), but seeing (smelling!) the pizza was amazing.

I think this will lead to us getting pizza from there and discovering it's 1000 times nicer and maybe 2x the price of the regular place. Actually that already sounds like a good trade. *homer doughnut noises*

Speaking so much of things we didn't eat.. I actually had some battered calemari and then a carbonara. The calemari were so-so, but the carbonara was a work of art. I've made carbonara a lot so I know it's one of those "simple" things that really shows any imperfection, and this was perfect.

Yesterday Nigel and yours truely went on a "nature walk":

Official stats: 8 miles, 7 pubs and 7 pints.

Feel like we missed a trick there.

Munching on some overnight oats. Quite nice. Can't imagine I'll be this organised very often though.

New job: still chill.

I've become unhealthily obsessed with the mechanical keyboard world.. This is because I'm finally letting myself buy a crazy custom mech-keyboard. It's a serious rabbit hole. But fun to dive into.

Really enjoyed watching Edgar Wright's documentary about Sparks. I'm not sure if this is because Sparks are really interesting or if Edgar Wright could make a film about the phone book and have it be really good. I don't know.. But it's a fun film to watch on a Saturday morning and pay 1/3 attention :D

Took the dog to the pub for the first time in a very long time. We've been getting an increasing amount of "nice to see you, where's the dog?" comments in recent times. So we finally took him. I underestimated just how much he enjoys going to the pub. He's had a super smug happy glow for the rest of the day.

We're going to have to take him back soon, as a lot of his fanbase were missing tonight.

I'm really over having covid. However [personal profile] kr0nulus seems to have turned the corner, so hopefully my turn soon.

Praise be to strepsils.
