Today's /. brought the entirely obvious news that "Rupert Murdoch Hates Google, Loves the iPad". Well duh, the iPad's hideous lock-down is Muroch's wet dream, a flicker of hope that this nasty open internet thing may yet be destroyed and replaced with something nice and restricted where he can make fat piles of cash.

I understand that the internet is a big challenge for traditional journalists, but, it's really not going away. If you want to paywall off your stuff then fine, it'll actually have to be worth the money; but fine good luck with that. However you're going to have to compete with people who give their content away for free. If you're not going to paywall off your stuff then expect people to parse it and link to you, I really really DONT believe that stuff like google news do any damage to news content makers. Quite to opposite, it channels more people to your site.

On the iPad front I really can't see this generation giving Rupert what he wants, but it'll probably grow into something better (partly funded by the Apple fans who are SO zealous they'll buy Apple's products even when they're crap).

Hopefully though, more people will choose to use open unrestricted tablets (and or just stick with their open unrestricted computers); because if the majority choose to buy into the iPad vision of locked down hardware where your own purchases work against you then it'll be a very sad day indeed.

I'd love to champion one of the other tablets which seem to be springing up all over the place, but most of those look pretty rubbish as well. I guess we're still getting our heads around this technology niche. I just hope when the chips are down these things become useful portable devices which you can use for anything you choose.
